action, goals, personal effectiveness, plan, schedule, success, time management, vision

Having a clear vision for the future; having a plan to get the job done and; having a schedule for the completion of each task, takes you a long way towards successfully achieving your goals. They take you a lot of the way but there is one more key step - take action. Vision without effective action is merely daydreaming. All the planning and scheduling is useless, unless you take action. Once you have gotten as far as a specific schedule, it is generally easier to motivate yourself to take action. But what if you are stuck? What if the best schedule you could produce is patchy and incomplete? The answer is the same – take action! Just because you do not know the whole route does not mean that you cannot start the journey.

3 Major benefits when you take action

Taking action allows you to experience 3 major benefits which you will not experience otherwise:

1. You become committed

As long as you haven’t taken action, it is easy to find an excuse to back out. Once you take action, your commitment and motivation are increased.  You have started the job so naturally you want to succeed. As you progress through the job, your desire to succeed grows stronger.

2.  Learning from failure becomes possible

Learning from failure is one of the quickest ways to improve your chances of success. Once you take action, you will experience some form of an outcome. Each outcome offers the opportunity to learn, both from what went right and what went wrong. This information allows you to learn from your mistakes and correct what you have been doing wrong, thus bringing you closer to your goal.

 3. Help will arrive

When you take action you soon realise that there are numerous options available, to provide you with help and advice. For example, when you experience a problem, 5 minutes on Google will usually help you to come up with a few potential solutions. You also find that you encounter more people, either online or offline, who are able and willing to help you move forward, towards your goal.

Most recently, when I started my business I realised that I would need to build my own website. I would always have described myself as ‘the least practical person you could meet’.  At first I dreaded the thought of working on the site but I set about the task, and soon discovered a plentiful supply of people, and resources, that could help and advise me.  The site is not perfect but it is far better than I had initially imagined and it is constantly evolving.  My confidence in my ability to learn, and improve, in this area, has grown exponentially. Had I failed to take action, I would be a lot further from my goals right now.
