When we are failing to produce the results that we really want from life it can be very tempting to assume that we don't know the right course of action.
It can be just as tempting to assume that we don't have enough time to get the important stuff done.
From my coaching experience, I seldom find either of these excuses to be true. Certainly not with people who have been accustomed to achieving good results from their life.
A more common problem is the inability to maintain focus on the most important task until it is completed. Note that I said the most important 'task'.
The problem with modern work is that we are now in the age of the knowledge worker where our jobs are no longer laid out in great detail for us. Before we can decide what to do next, we need to know exactly what needs to be done so that we are in a position to choose the right option i.e. you cannot make the best choice if you are not aware of all of the options.
This has resulted in a complete lack of organisation whereby we are never quite sure what we should be doing. As a result, we regularly jump from task to task without finishing any of them. It's like shiny toy syndrome whereby the task that shines brightest gets our attention until another task comes along and shines even brighter or; we discover that we have procrastinated for too long on an urgent task and we are in danger of missing the deadline for completion.
