The number one reason that people fail to achieve their goals is; they lack clarity of vision about the life they want to live. The reason for this lack of clarity is that they have committed little, or no, time to developing clarityof vision. People will take sufficient time to think about their vacation, the clothes they want to wear, the TV shows they want to watch; but they are unwilling to spend a little time each week developing clarity of vision regarding their future. The end result of these choices is a life spent chasing instant gratification at the expense of personal fulfilment. Many people think that they are setting clear and effective goals but they are merely identifying things which they would like to have or do; not what they truly desire. These goals do not tie into a clear vision of the life they wish to lead. They lack identity and purpose. The problem with this approach is that when things get tough you will not push yourself that extra mile for something you would like to have. You will only push yourself that far for something you truly desire. Personal fulfilment comes from accomplishing goals that you truly desire.

3 Questions to develop clarity of vision

There are 3 key questions to help you develop the necessary clarity of vision.

1. Who do you want to be?

This is  about determining the principles and values that are most important to you. The principles and values that you wish to live by, and promote in this world.

2. What do you want to do?

Once you have identified the principles and values which are most important to you; you can decide how you are going to promote these values. This can include, but is not restricted to, your occupation e.g. if you wish to inspire and educate; you could be a teacher, coach, cleric etc. You could also choose to live your life in a manner whereby you challenge your limits each and every day; and in the process, inspire and educate others as a role model.

3. What do you want to have?

This includes possessions, experiences, achievements etc. The majority of these goals should be focused on fulfilling the first two steps or, have some relationship to them. While not all of these goals need be focused on the first two steps, it is imperative that these goals do not contradict the principles and values espoused in those steps. If they do contradict, not only will these goals fail to bring you fulfilment and happiness; they will have a negative impact on your sense of self-worth and your life in general. You can develop a vision and goals for your life with the Ultimate Guide to Goal Setting. Personal fulfilment begins with a clarity of vision about the future you wish to create. Taking a little time each week to focus on that vision will make sure that each action taken and every goal achieved increases your sense of fulfilment by bringing you closer to that vision.
