What is growth time?
Growth time is any time used for training, education or practise, which enables us to grow as a person and take on new challenges. Examples might include:
- Resistance training
- Fitness training
- An educational course
- Tasks aimed at improving mental agility
- Practising personal or interpersonal skills
The tasks which may enable, or support, growth are many and varied. While some of these tasks may be short and intensive, they are more usually consistent efforts carried out over longer periods. In many cases, they become life-long habits. Growth time is most effective when scheduled into daily life.
Growth time can best be demonstrated using the example of fitness training. If you start a new regime with too much intensity, you will quickly burn out and give up. This will result in little or no growth. However, if you start slow, ease yourself into it, and gradually increase the intensity over time, you will soon see rewards. Also, you are more likely to enjoy your new regime leading to it becoming a cherished habit. The most effective growth is usually achieved this way.
Growth time is very important. It can give you immense satisfaction and a feeling of achievement as you see your progress. However, it can be addictive. You can choose to spend all your time focusing on growth but if you never use your strength, skills etc., you are likely to encounter a number of problems. Some of the problems which you might experience when you focus too much time on growth include:
- Lack of results in your life and career i.e. you are always practising but never performing the actual work
- Reduced performance due to lack of preparation
- Lack of fun and leisure time
- Lack of rest and recovery time

It is human nature to want to grow and progress. We want to achieve more and receive bigger rewards. To do this, requires an investment in ourselves. It requires repeated and consistent commitment to self-improvement. Without this commitment we stagnate and regress. To support this growth, growth time must form a pivotal part of any balanced and effective time management plan.
