Goals are a fantastic tool for reducing stress and driving performance. Goals give you a clear sense of direction. You know what you are trying to achieve and the purpose behind each action. To receive the full benefit of goal setting, it is essential to stay focused on your goals. Reviewing your goals each day and using a picture goals book can help you to maintain your focus. Another simple but effective tool is goal imagery.
Goal imagery is an effective tool which can be used at almost any time. It can take as little as 1 minute. The purpose of goal imagery is to develop a clear vision of the goal in your mind and to allow you to develop powerful, positive feelings about the accomplishment of that goal. The vision and feelings keep you focused and motivated. To use goal imagery, all you need is clear goals, a vivid imagination and a willingness to experiment.
Using goal imagery
The following steps outline my own adaptation of goal imagery which I use with my clients:
Step 1
Choose which goal you wish to work on. This may be a goal from any area of your life.
Step 2
Choose a vivid image for this goal. The image may be a still image e.g. you relaxing on a beach or, a moving image e.g. you’re walking along a beach. It is a matter of preference as to which one you choose. Other options you may consider include:
- Are you in the image or are you seeing it through your eyes?
- Are there any noises? e.g. are you having a conversation, can you hear traffic?
- Can you smell anything?
- Can you feel anything? e.g water gently flowing over your feet.
A little trial and error is required to determine which aspects of imagery work best for you. The most important thing is that you get the sensation of achieving the goal and that this inspires positive and powerful feelings within you.
Step 3
At least once per day, take a little time to focus on that image and enjoy the positive feelings that it brings. Goal imagery only requires a brief amount of time so you can use it anytime you have a few moments to kill e.g. waiting for a friend, between meetings, while taking public transport.
